FREEDOM KAYAK ADVENTURES' KAYAK & SUP SKILLS CLASSES - 2017 Summer Series

Designed for all levels of paddlers, FKA's Classes are an excellent way to build your confidence on the water and have more fun!

Our courses focus on specific skill-sets and are taught by an ACA (American Canoe Association) certified instructor in respect to the ACA standards. Classes are semi-private, meaning you are with a small group of similar skill level students, limited to 5 students per instructor. It is assumed that you have your own boat and gear, yet rental equipment is available and included in the price.

SKILLS CLASS DESCRIPTIONS & DATES, 2017:

Introduction to Kayaking: DATES: Sat May 20 12-3pm, Sat May 20 4:30-7:30pm, Sat Jun 10 9am-12pm, Fri Jul 14 6-9pm, Sun Aug 13 9am-12pm, Sep 10 1-4pm

Introduction to Kayaking is the foundation of our recommended progression in your kayaking skills education. You will learn efficient paddling techniques and the necessary strokes to maneuver your kayak. In this fun and easy way to get started kayaking, you also learn about kayaking safety, equipment, launching and landing. This class is suited for the beginner or those experienced and yet to undergo formal instruction.
Class Size Limit: 5, Cost: $60.00, Time: 3 hours.

Introduction to Kayaking for Adaptive Paddling: TBA & Upon Request

This class is geared toward paddlers with disabilities and those that wish to learn how to assist in their enjoyment of kayaking. Based on our Introduction to Kayaking Class, this is the foundation of our recommended progression in your kayaking skills education. We will cover the basics of paddling adaptations to make your adventures work better for you. You will learn efficient paddling techniques and the necessary strokes to maneuver your kayak in any direction. In this fun and easy way to get started kayaking, you will learn about kayaking safety, equipment, launching and landing. This class is suited for the beginner or those experienced and yet to undergo formal instruction.Your registration fee for this class includes one student and one of your assistants. Prior consultation with the instructor is required. Adaptations to your gear must be installed prior to this course.
Class Size Limit: 5, Cost: $60.00, Time: 3 hours.
 

Introduction to Kayaking for Seniors (+55): TBA & Upon Request

This class is geared toward the seasoned adult in a comfortable atmosphere, focusing on specific abilities and adaptations. Based on our Introduction to Kayaking Class, this is the foundation of our recommended progression in your kayaking skills education. You will learn efficient paddling techniques and the necessary strokes to maneuver your kayak in any direction. In this fun and easy way to get started kayaking, you will learn about kayaking safety, equipment, launching and landing. This class is suited for the beginner or those experienced and yet to undergo formal instruction.
Class Size Limit: 5, Cost: $60.00, Time: 3 hours.
 

Introduction to SUP (Stand Up Paddleboarding): DATES: Sat Jul 15 9am-12pm, Fri Aug 11 6-9pm

As with our Intro to Kayaking, Intro to SUP is the foundation of learning skills required to competently and safely enjoy SUP. You will learn efficient paddling techniques and the necessary strokes to maneuver your SUP in any direction. In this fun and easy way to get started SUP, you will learn about board and blade designs and options, paddlesports safety, equipment, launching and landing. Plus, you get the chance to try out several different styles and sizes of boards. This class involves possible immersion, so plan to get wet...it's part of the process!This class is suited for the beginner or those experienced and yet to undergo formal instruction.

Kayaking Turns & Maneuvers: upon request

Learn advanced turns, sweeps, draws and multiple moves that will make you more efficient, maneuverable and more comfortable on the water.
Class Size Limit: 5, Cost: $60.00, Time: 3 hours.

Kayaking Bracing & Edging: upon request

Learn the invaluable skills of precise balance and how to apply them to more complex maneuvers. You'll learn how to apply the 'edge' limit of your kayak, how prevent capsizing and how to incorporate these movements into your paddling skills toolkit. This class involves possible immersion, so plan to get wet...it's part of the process!

Stroke Refinement: upon request

This class teaches you better boat control with detailed instruction on the huge array of strokes available to make you a more efficient paddler. We'll work on adding power to your forward stroke and multiple advanced stroke maneuvers.

Kayaking Safety & Rescues: DATES: Sun Jun 11 9am-12pm, Fri Jul 21 6-9pm, Sat Aug 19 9am-12pm

As an advanced skills course you will learn an introduction to safety and rescue equipment, how to outfit your kayak for safety, low and high brace maneuvers, the wet-exit technique, self-rescues with variations on the re-entry technique, cowboy scramble solo re-entry, assisted “T” rescues, “Hand of God" rescue for incapacitated paddlers, scoop rescue, bow rescue, and towing with and without tow lines. This class involves immersion, so plan to get wet...it's part of the process!
Class Size Limit: 5, Cost: $60.00, Time: 3 hours.

Practice Workshop: coincides with scheduled classes

In appreciation to our class clients, this is an exclusive customer event for everyone that has completed a Freedom Kayak Adventures paddling class to date. If you would like to brush up on the skills learned, Jason will be on-hand to give feedback as you practice the class skills you've worked so hard to achieve. You can attend 2 of these events per class completed, at no charge.
Class Size Limit: none, Cost: Free for clients (advance registration required), Time: 2 hours.
 

Private Rolling Lesson: upon request

As the most effective self-rescue technique, ‘Eskimo’ Rolling your kayak back to upright while remaining in the boat is an integral part of learning to kayak. Rolling makes paddling a joy by lessening the fear and hassle of swimming. Learning to roll your boat effectively and quickly can make you a safer paddler as well as making kayaking more enjoyable. We guarantee success in this one-on-one rolling session. For those that have already learned to roll, we offer to hone your skill and add new and exciting variations with multiple styles and methods.
Cost: $75.00 -Time: 2 hours

Private Kayaking or SUP Lesson: upon request

Private Kayaking or SUP Lessons are available throughout the paddling season. Private Lessons cost more, but they provide customization to you, learning at your own pace, maximum individual attention, flexibility and an alternative to regularly scheduled lessons. Private Lessons can include any skills from our group lessons or specific topics you desire.
Cost: $85 first hour, $45 each additional.

Private Adaptive Paddling Lesson: upon request

This class is geared toward a paddler with a disability, and their assistant, that wish to learn how to enhance their enjoyment of kayaking. A Private Adaptive Paddling Lesson provides a personal structure for you, custom outfitting of your boat, learning at your own pace, maximum individual attention and flexibility. We will cover the basics of paddling adaptations to make your adventures work better for you. Your registration fee for this class includes one student and one of your assistants. Prior consultation with the instructor is required. There may be additional costs, depending on the materials needed to adapt your boat and/or gear.
Cost: $85 first hour, $45 each additional.

ADDITIONAL SKILLS CLASS INFORMATION

Essential Eligibility Criteria: In order to participate in a Skills Training Lesson, each participant must satisfy the following essential eligibility criteria:

  • Be able to independently participate in all individual skills and activities listed in the course outline while also maintaining an appropriate and safe body position Be able to hold their breath while under water and, while in the water wearing a properly fitted lifejacket, be able to independently turn from a face down to a face up position keeping their head above water
  • Be able to effectively communicate with the instructor and other course participants
  • Be able to manage all personal care independently, or with the assistance of a companion
  • Be able to manage all personal mobility independently, or with the assistance of a companion

Class Notes

  • It's best to learn in your own boat or board, but if you need a kayak or SUP, PFD and paddle, they are included for the class. Please let us know when you RSVP.
  • In case of inclement weather, we will attempt to notify registered participants of class postponement, but sometimes we won't know until shortly before the event.
  • Please arrive at least 30 minutes prior to class time so you have time to go over materials, final registration paperwork and allow us to get you outfitted with gear for the class.
  • Classes are limited, so if you register for the class and have an emergency that will not allow you to attend, please  let us know so that students on the waiting list can plan accordingly to attend.
  • What to Bring: Come prepared to get wet from the drip of your paddle, or splashing water, and to be out in the sun. Dress for the weather. Lightweight/synthetic (layered clothing is best), sunglasses, sun block, insect repellant and a hat. Bring a camera but make sure it’s waterproof or in a waterproof bag.
